Whenever I ask my two-year-old, Ruben, to do anything, he replies, “Okay, three minutes.” Diaper change. Getting ready to leave the house. Dinner. It doesn’t matter. We must wait three minutes.
The problem is that he has absolutely no concept of time. Three minutes could mean one second, ten hours, or a century. The longest three minutes I’ve ever waited required me to reset my phone's timer twenty times. He needed to take medicine. That day, three minutes was one hour.
A friend once told me that most fights with his kids revolve around time, because children simply don’t understand it. Usually, I think that’s true.
But I’m starting to believe Ruben does understand time.
Because when I ask him how many three is, he lifts one small hand…
and gives me the finger.
If you have tips for negotiating with very skilled two-year-olds, I’m listening.
