Texts I Wish Camp Sent Me During My Son's First Day
I swear, it's great that they have a no contact unless there's an emergency policy.
(8:59 AM: Drop kid off at the bus stop for the first day of "real" camp.)
9:05 AM: What a guy! He’s doing great on the bus, you would never known he used to have trouble with drop offs.
10:15 AM: You’ve done a great job raising him! He did really well during swim, good splashy kicking, lots of treading water, and changed in and out of his clothes all by himself. Also, he’s been drinking a ton of water. (No, not just in the pool!)
10:16 AM: I forgot, he’s peed a bunch too. It’s clear, don’t worry – we are just as concerned about the heat and dehydration as you are!
11:30 AM: This kid is an eater! He ate his sandwich, some carrots, a few blueberries, and some pretzels. He seems really glad you sent him here. I know you were nervous about lunch and maybe some potential lonely feelings, but he’s chatting with everyone. He’s got such thoughtful questions.
1:07 PM: Just a reminder you’re a great mom, it’s normal to be nervous about the first day of camp. I mean he took a bus across town all by himself. Who wouldn’t want minute by minute updates.
1: 25 PM: I wish I could text more, but it’s been a little hectic.
1: 49 PM: Biking and drama have been his favorite activities so far; he’s got a gift for the stage. Has anyone ever said anything to you about his comedic timing? Wow!
2:02 PM: Ok, it’s official – we’ve got a new friend! They’re playing kickball.
2:43 PM: He just told me you work full-time in tech and write a Substack on the side, cool! Also, congrats on your ten month old! You look great.
3:01 PM: If you need any Saturday night babysitters, I’m happy to help out. My schedule is wide open. Also, do you want me to send you these updates every day throughout the whole summer because that’s not a problem. Really! I don’t mind doing it.
3:15 PM: And he’s tired. He just got on the bus, popsicle in hand, and said he’s so excited to come back tomorrow. FYI we are blasting the fans — who knew the first day of campy would be 95 degrees! We’re so thrilled to have him, he’s going to make our summer.
(3:30 PM: Pick up. Kid is hot, sweating, sticky, and smiling.)
2:02 PM: Ok, it’s official – we’ve got a new friend! They’re playing kickball.
